Art

Art and Design at Shibden Head Primary Academy

We aim to teach children to:

• develop a visual awareness
• use art to record feelings and express creative imagination
• develop visual vocabulary
• understand the visual elements of colour, line, texture, tone, pattern, shape and form in order for them to effectively express themselves through art
• develop mastery of a range of tools, media and processes
• develop critical abilities and an understanding of our cultural heritage
• acquire artistic skills and techniques
• develop their capacity to evaluate their own and others’ art work
• know about art and artists from different cultures and times

National Curriculum

Elements of the National Curriculum are included in our Art lessons and Learning Challenge themes, taking into account the needs of our pupils in our local context.

Teaching and Learning

Art is taught as an ongoing subject, linking into other curriculum areas where possible.A long term plan is followed linked to Learning Challenge topics or English texts- see the curriculum maps for each year group for more detail.
We celebrate art at the end of the year in an Art, Poetry and Music Festival during the last weeks of the term, where work is shared with parents and the local community. This has been a popular and well received yearly event and the children are proud to see all the work they have produced over the year displayed in a gallery style. Teachers use the year-group expectations when planning, to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum and ensure progression through school.
Teaching and Learning is organised around the four areas of study identified for Art and Design:
• Exploring and developing ideas
• Investigating and making art, craft and design
• Evaluating and developing
• Knowledge and understanding.

The three main starting points for work are first-hand observation, experience (memory) and imagination. All children experience a variety of materials and processes in 2D and 3D. A range of styles of teaching are necessary for the teaching of Art and Design.

Art around School

Art is displayed around school on displays boards, these are changed regularly over the year in order to showcase different year groups’ art work.
